yeah apple watch is great for time and distance and heartrate. i use the strava app!
you have plenty of time before august which is great. i started with this 0-5k plan which helped me ease into running my first 3-5 miles. https://www.hoka.com/en/gb/couch-to-5k/ it'll also give you a good baseline of how much to run per week. 2-3 times a week was a good cadence for me to start incorporating running into my life, but not let it be overwhelming.
another rule of thumb i followed, after i got to running 5k, was to increase your overall mileage by 10% each week. That steady growth will feel natural and also injury free.
the great thing is, there's so many people who've run so may different races, you can probably find a plan that fits what you need till august. then you just don't think but just follow the plan.
I often wish I could run. I used to enjoy it. I’ve long since accepted my limitations and choose swimming instead. Hiking is also becoming a challenge now as my injuries catch up with me. But it pleases me greatly to read your words Minnow. Bravo, and well done!
This is inspiring me to take my running to the next level! I’ve been running for a while, but haven’t pushed myself to increase my distance in a long time. I know the time commitment it will take to get there, which is intimidating, but I also know I’ll regret it if I don’t try.
omg. it takes SO long. like two hours of my time, but like i was telling katie, i think it's become a hobby and hobbies are about putting your time and energy into something for the sheer joy of it.
It’s funny how it starts off feeling like a chore and then at some point becomes a hobby that you crave. A half marathon is my longest distance. I’ve been wavering on doing a full but maybe 2024 will be the year!
that book haunted me as i wrote this and as i think about writing about running more. like, why does anyone else have to talk about it when he said it so perfectly? lol
Haha my 압빠 has been running 2 miles every other day for a few years. I had him read that book bc I thought he would like it. He did like it, got inspired, randomly ran a 10k, and had to go to urgent care because he got extreme lower back pain. He violated rule #1. My mom and sister are so annoyed at him right now
Congratulations Minnow!! This is incredible!! Because, you’re right, it’s not even so much about the mileage (although 10mi is super impressive!)… it’s about falling in love with running and embodying the life of an athlete. I remember these emotions from my own old running life. My run-walk training (soooo slow) to get to a 5k to a 5k in 24 minutes, then my first 10k, and my first Half. It was a magical time!! I’d tell you to enjoy every moment but your brilliant smile in those photos tells me I don’t need to! Good luck with the rest of your training!!
awww thank you friend. yeah there's an embodiment that goes beyond what the thing is. people have asked me like what is your hobby, and i think this is one true version of that.
So good, Minnow! ❤️
wow means a lot from you!
I'm not a runner - my sister is a runner though, and signed us up for a group race in August - I'm looking forward to training to run.
Has having an Apple Watch been helpful? Any other advice other than keep bpm below 160 and just...run?
how long is the race going to be?

Couch-to-5k looks like exactly the plan I needed!
So inspired by u
i really am inspired by you, and this means so much.

swimming is soo good and i think so much better for you. i was seriously into it until COVID hit and i lost the drive for it.

what's your usual distance in running?

aaa Minnow you look so happy in those pictures!
awww. thank you. i try to take it when the runner's high kicks in!
I think you're now legally obligated to read "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running" by Murakami. Love the energy with which you tell stories!

Oh it’s definitely a lifestyle! Right down to wanting to talk about it to anyone who will listen! 😂
